Employment: The SeniorSMART® Endowed Chair in Memory and Brain Health: SmartBRAIN®
The SmartBRAIN® initiative will focus on developing methods to promote brain health and reduce the impact diseases of such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and stroke. SmartHOME®, SmartWHEELS®, and SmartBRAIN® comprise SeniorSMART® (www.seniorsmart.sc.edu), a South Carolina Center for Economic Excellence (www.sccoee.org) that has been developed among three academic partners (Clemson University, the Medical University of South Carolina, and the University of South Carolina) and two hospital systems (Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center and Palmetto Health) and the Dorn Veterans Administration.
The SmartBRAIN® initiative will work closely with the Brain Imaging Center of Economic Excellence (www.bicoee.org). The SmartBRAIN® Endowed Chair will be based in the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia (USC SOM-C) as a full time academic position at the preferred Full Professor level, but may accept Associate Professor with a primary appointment in the Department of Neurology, USC SOM-C, with opportunities for joint appointment in other academic units at USC and its partners.
The successful applicant will have an MD and/or PhD degree with MD applicants who are preferably board certified in Neurology with sub-specialty fellowship training and/or PhD applicants preferably with a concentration in the area of Neuroscience. The applicant should have a demonstrated track record in interdisciplinary scholarly productivity and programmatic support from competitive extramural funding sources. Familiarity with the mechanisms for enhancing research value through economic development (e.g. intellectual property, interaction with relevant businesses, translational research activities, etc.) that will build on South Carolina Centers of Economic Excellence Program is highly desirable. We are seeking a person with leadership qualities capable of performing research and interacting with an innovative program of human-based research on cognition, memory and dementia. Multidisciplinary research available through collaborations with the SmartHOME® and SmartWHEELS® Endowed Chairs, Departments of Pharmacology, Physiology & Neuroscience, Neuropsychiatry, the McCausland Center for Brain Imaging,and the emerging Stroke Center. Other academic disciplines through the partnerships will be encouraged. The work environment within and outside the department is friendly and collegial.
