The SmartBRAIN® initiative will focus on developing methods to promote brain health and reduce the impact diseases of such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and stroke.  SmartHOME®, SmartWHEELS®, and SmartBRAIN® comprise SeniorSMART® (www.seniorsmart.sc.edu), a South Carolina Center for Economic Excellence (www.sccoee.org) that has been developed among three academic partners (Clemson University, the Medical University of South Carolina, and the University of South Carolina) and two hospital systems (Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center and Palmetto Health) and the Dorn Veterans Administration.

SmartHome® will enable older adults to stay in their own homes longer through the use of new technologies and community services. In addition, SmartHome® researchers are looking at housing policies and ways to help older adults facing financial decisions.  SeniorSMART® researchers are partnering with the University of Kaiserslautern, the Fraunhofer Institute (Inventors of MP3 technology), Sintef, and others to develop, evaluate, and apply new SmartHOME® technology.
